Exhibition Review by M. J. Noritsch Keynote, the essential feature, in the exhibited works of Sylvia Janowski is "content is a spark" - the existence of the moment is captured. Still, conceptually and graphically painterly narrative. Color as substance of the visible moment; the line as its concrete reflection. Means of expression such as chalk and mixed media drawing soft the marginal details of an eye-gaze and show shadows, which capture the transition from "appearance" to "disappear" as a snapshot. So we see as viewers naturally shaded depth in the leaves of bright red flower (120x180cm) - in addition to irritating shadowless vibrations. Still life imprisonment modern the "Crawfish" (110x180cm) and minimal shadows projected by "Boots", for example, describe easing and tension of the current happenings. To whom or what Janowski gives space?
Shadowy –even if also chalk-white– passes, crosses the "Pair" the imaged area... The exciting thing about the series "Snatches of time" is the fact that shadowlessness is not translated with the missing of beings: the black "Lantern" is unclouded statement – protagonist of a wooden plate image that rather much devoted his attention to the generated by the light-giving glow cobblestones. In all artworks the close meets us in a sensitive way: its commitment if we put together two shadows, they become one. This fact in itself has nothing threatening, but something else happens to the viewer: as in "Bookshelf" certain clearances are unexpectedly visible, they surprise, are sometimes disturbing. Miraculously the moment we do not read the title on the spine, but sequentially look at the spaces that lie between things.
This still enhances in "network": the lines’ swatches are surrounded by different colors Janowski filled individually in. Form follows content. This compositional and technical consideration resolves itself in the end: transience and future could be fixed by the artist on the canvas - architectural and organic dynamics are getting visible that mesh like gears of time. Once again proves this exhibition that art is determined by give and take: Art fills us. And we, the viewer, fill the picture area with the content that we are willing to share.
